CHAPTER FIFTEEN

LAKE

When I wake, I’m confused why until I realize that Declan is shifting around in his sleep. At first, I think he’s readjusting, but the tension in his expression and body tells me that something is wrong.

Reaching out, I gently let my fingers brush over his face. “Declan?”

Still, he doesn’t stir. Whatever dream he’s wrapped up in seems to be holding tightly onto him.

“Hey, Declan,” I say a little louder as I pull myself in close to him so he can feel me. “It’s okay. Wake up.”

He startles awake and pushes against me before realizing it’s me and letting out a breath of relief.

“Fuck,” he mutters as I wrap my arm around him. He still feels tense, so I tuck his head against my chest as I rub his back.

“You better now?”

“Yeah… hell… it was like I knew I was dreaming, but it was so real… I guess because I was dreaming about shit that happened in the past…”

“Do you do that a lot?” I ask as he pulls back a little to look at me.

“I used to but not much anymore.”

I let my finger draw a line down the side of his face, and he closes his eyes for a moment as he takes a deep breath. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“I just… I don’t know if this is right or not, but why would I think about this exact memory, you know? It just feels like there’s a reason I’m thinking about it.”

“What happened?” I ask, so he tells me what he’d been dreaming about. I listen intently as he talks about a time when he was a hunter and the darkness of dealing with others in his field. About how he’d lost control and how much he wanted to kill this Grady person.

There’s more care and compassion in Declan than he’ll ever admit.

“I just… what made me think of this?” he asks.

“You think it’s connected?” I wonder.

“That kid we spared, the boy? I never saw his form as a chimera because he immediately got onto the ground… but if that man was his father… then he looks very much like the chimera who jumped off the roof of the DRD the night we went to help save Patrick. You know, the one who crushed my car?”

“And my donuts… that I guess I didn’t really want anyway.”

“Right. I didn’t piece it together right away because they weren’t identical, but that was at least five years ago, so he’d be at least twenty-one or so… And no wonder he wants me dead. If it weren’t for my team, two people in his life wouldn’t have died… three, I guess, including the one that killed Manuel. I’ll need to ask Patrick if they have any images of him in his chimera form… and see what happened to him.”

“Do you know what happens to them?” I ask. This is a topic that is often discussed among the chimeras. Some think they are all slaughtered, others believe they are imprisoned or something worse.
